The SGAO is nearing the point of obtaining membership information.
Located in southern Georgia, the SGAO is currently being organized to provide an environment for amateur or professional astronomers to meet and share their love of astronomy. Currently, there are no organizations for amateur astronomers in southern Georgia, and we are in need of one!
The organization observatory, the Red Barn Observatory, is located on dark property well away from city light pollution just south of Ty Ty, GA and currently houses a 10" reflector. Meetings and gatherings will be held on pre-determined nights throughout the month (usually on weekends and special celestial events), and currently no membership fees will apply. Organization members will play roles in learning and/or teaching subjects such as celestial object identification, constellations, telescope techniques and just anything else we may think of as the organization grows.
A federal grant has been recently proposed to supply funding for a 0.4m (16") RC reflector on a fully robotic equatorial mount and an advanced CCD imager capable of producing high-resolution wide angle images. If the funding is granted, a project named ©MAPNEO (Measure And Predict all Near Earth Objects) will be put into effect to begin the first amateur organized and operated project to observe, measure, and detect potential near Earth objects. All astrometry produced through the MAPNEO with the 0.4m RC will be reported to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and uploaded to the observatory website. The results of the funding will be known later in the year...
If you are interested in learning and/or teaching astronomy techniques or just want a dark site to set-up your telescope, to become a member of the SGAO, please use the contact information below.
If you are already educated in astronomy especially in astrometry and detection of asteroids and comets, and are interested in volunteering and participating in project MAPNEO, or assisting in the initial "set-up" and operation of the Southern Georgia Astronomical Organization, contact me: Steve E. Farmer Jr. at the information below.
